My name is Coni. I’m a Chilean Human Rights lawyer turned travel writer and photographer. I’m aiming to go to all the corners of the world to carry one simple message: we’re all the same. For years I’ve been looking for the most interesting travel experiences to guide my trips, so I came up with a bucket list with the best 201. In Experiencing the Globe I’m writing about them, while trying to spread mindfulness, inspiration and knowledge. Once there was a road so dangerous that it became world renowned as the Death Road. Thankfully the government decided to built a paved alternative to bypass it. And a genius thought to start descending the original one in mountain bikes. Really, genius!
Today those adventurous souls that dare to go down “El Camino de la Muerte” get to call themselves survivors (there’s a cold beer at the end of the ride to celebrate, and even a t-shirt to remember the feat!).
Not for the faint-hearted, but for those looking for an adrenaline rush, the Yungas has you covered. In a few hours you’ll go from 4700 meters of altitude to 1000, on a proper mountain bike downhill, with a drop of up to 800 meters to your side. It was deemed the most dangerous road in the world for a reason!
Although I’ve never tried mountain biking before, the 5% of absolute terror I felt was widely overcame by the 95% pure fun I had while going down the road at crazy speeds, using muscles I didn’t know I had to try to control the bike.

I was always jealous of the first explorers, those Europeans whose adventures into the uncharted kept me awake so many nights. I lost myself in books telling the stories of Livingstone and Stanley in East Africa, Shackleton in Antarctica, and Bingham in Perú. And every time I read a new book, I ended up with envy of how they saw places for the first time, how they were the first to summit mountains, how they encounter the local First Nations.
Now I have no jealousy for those Europeans. I’m envious of the indigenous communities that first arrived to those lands. That found a truly wild environment and made it their home. Those that didn’t need to tame nature, but embraced what they came across and learnt how to live in harmony with it.
I envy the simplicity and humbleness. The recognition that nature is everything, and that we humans are just lucky to live in a planet that gives us all we need.
I’ve come to feel anger towards those first Europeans that I used to admire (although their books keep entertaining me). Their worldview —in which “Indians” and nature were there to be exploited— changed the life of millions, and the geography of so many places.
How different history would have been if they would have tried to understand the First Nations. If they would have learnt from them instead of imposing a European way to do things.
I’m trying to get as much knowledge from those whose path are crossing mine, and I hope that what I’m writing about this trip to Bolivia will do them justice.
📍 My amazing guides through the park are descendants of the Tacana community, and decided to use the ink extracted from a leaf to decorated my face with the tribal symbol of a scorpion, since they thought I have the courage of one.
I love every second of the days I spent in the jungle, but this made me feel incredibly empowered. There’s so much beauty in the way traditions are still held! Thanks so much @gonzalescuajera for allowing me to be part of your culture, even if it was for a short moment in time ❤️

It was believed for long that the Amazon River Basin was not environmentally able to sustain a large population and that its indigenous inhabitants were hunter-gatherers. But the The Llanos de Moxos (Moxos Plains), have extensive remains of pre-Columbian agricultural societies scattered over most of the Beni Department. The remains show a well-organized and numerous indigenous people.
Today we see countless monumental mounds —well, the estimation is around 20,000. The raised fields permitted drainage during the rainy season to sustain agriculture throughout the year.
There was been no support from the government for archeologist to research more of the Cultura Hidráulica de las Lomas, but some have estimated that they go back up to 8,500 years. You read that right, eight thousand and five hundred years. But all that everyone cares about are the Inkas.
In a country where only Aymara and Quechua cultures seem to matter, there is an immensity more to discover! I can’t say it enough, come visit the Beni region!

Don’t go to the Beni Department, they said. It’s poor and ugly, they said. Well, as I’m stubborn, I went. And I loved it!
After a whole day of traveling from Santa Cruz to Trinidad, I drove another few kilometers on a dirt road to reach the Chuchini Reserve. From there I spent my day on a boat around the Ibaré and Mamoré rivers, exploring the Bolivian pampas, and then hiking around the Amazonian jungle. What’s not to love?

Trying to capture the essence of the pampas (the Amazonian low grasslands) for someone that doesn’t have a lens for wildlife is nearly impossible, although the main reason to visit is the diverse fauna you’ll get to see (including pink dolphins, piranhas, capibaras, sloths, alligators, many monkeys, and even more birds —I saw all of them!).
So here are some photos of me having a blast, so you don’t dismiss the Beni Department, as most people (even Bolivians) will tell you to do.
I stayed at the Chuchini Reserve (@chuchini_trinidad_bolivia) and they organized an amazing few days discovering the pampas and jungle —not sponsored, I just really liked them :)

The Uyuni salt flats and the Altiplanic lagoons are such a beauty. I completely see why they are so popular!
I was also very lucky to go with a great guide and a fun group. Even if the landscapes are incredible, somehow they were even better in excellent company.
It’s weird to me to start a trip in such a touristy place, but there’s a reason why it’s so touristy. It’s really worth the trip —and such an amazing way to start a long journey around Bolivia 🇧🇴

$Most people only think of the Altiplano (the high Andes plateau) when imagining Bolivia. But there is so much more! Amboró National Park is one of the most diverse conservation areas in the country. It’s located at the "Elbow of the Andes", protecting parts of several distinct ecoregions: Southwest Amazon moist forests, Dry Chaco, Bolivian montane dry forests, Chiquitano dry forests, and Yungas. The altitude in the park ranges from 300 metres (980 ft) up to 3,338 metres (10,951 ft). I only got to explore a little fraction of it, going through a cloud forest, seeing giant ferns that are hundreds of years old, until I left the trees behind and entered grassy fields with panoramic views of the park. I’ve seen all sort of crazy photos from the Uyuni salt flats. And I thought, “how silly, the place must be gorgeous, why waste your time taking odd pictures?”.
Well, because they’re fun! I actually had a blast posing for silly pictures, while my awesome guide José (@quechuaconnection4wd) clicked away, and the cool group I went with obliged to his command.
