My name is Coni. I’m a Chilean Human Rights lawyer turned travel writer and photographer. I’m aiming to go to all the corners of the world to carry one simple message: we’re all the same. Yes, Petra is one of the most visited sites in the Middle East, and for good reason. It’s easy to feel skeptical about popular destinations, but Petra truly lives up to the hype. The scale, and the sheer craftsmanship carved into the rock —it all leaves you in awe, no matter how many people are around, which, sadly, not many are these days.

To visit Petra, base yourself in the nearby town of Wadi Musa —just a short walk from the archaeological site’s main entrance. Arrive early to beat the crowds, and plan to spend at least a full day exploring, although it’d be ideal if you can spear 2 or even 3. The standard ticket grants access to major landmarks like the Siq, the Treasury, the Royal Tombs and the Monastery. Is it possible for a place to feel both surreal and deeply grounded? Petra’s Treasury somehow manages to be both.

I went three times. Once when the first light of day kissed its sandstone façade. Once when the sun dipped and everything turned golden. And once at night, lit by hundreds of candles, under a sky full of stars. Each visit felt like being there for the first time.

Carved directly into the rock by the Nabataeans more than 2000 years ago, it wasn’t actually a treasury at all -it’s believed to have been a tomb for a Nabataean king. The urn at the top? Rumored to contain a hidden treasure, which gave the site its nickname.

But the real treasure here isn’t gold. It’s silence at sunrise. Warm light at sunset. Echoes of ancient footsteps. And a reminder that civilizations rise, fall and leave behind beauty for us to wonder at.

The Middle East is a region of contradictions. A land soaked in stories, in pain, in resilience.

At the Monastery in Petra, everything felt still. Carved in stone, kissed by centuries of sun, it’s peaceful in a way the news would have you believe the region could never be. But that’s the thing: the stories we’re told are often incomplete.

I’ve been welcomed with tea and laughter by Palestinians and Iranians —people whose governments oppress them, whose rights are stripped daily, whose names are used to justify violence. And I’ve seen the brutality of regimes: Hamas’ cruelty, the Ayatollahs’ tyranny. There’s no excusing them.

But nothing compares to what Netanyahu’s government is doing in Gaza. It’s not a conflict —it’s genocide. And now they are targeting civilians in Tehran. Saying this will cost me followers, I know. It always does. But I can’t walk through ancient cities built by peaceful hands and stay quiet about modern ones being erased by bombs.

I believe we can live in a world without war. Call me naive. But I’ve seen the humanity in places torn apart by politics. And I’ve met the people —kind, warm, hopeful— who deserve better than what their leaders inflict.

This account isn’t about politics, but it is political —because travel is. I write about borders, geopolitics, and human rights, and I try to do it with an open heart and an open mind. I keep the tone casual, the door open. But when something needs to be called out, I won’t stay silent. Not here. Not anywhere.

One moment I was standing in the scorching Jordanian sun, and the next I was floating past coral gardens and curious little fish that didn’t seem to mind the company.

The Red Sea is actually one of the saltiest seas in the world, but somehow it’s full of life. Warm waters, super clear visibility, and all kinds of colorful marine creatures make it a dream spot for diving —even if you’re a beginner like me!

I honestly was thinking of skipping Aqaba, since I’ve already dived in the Red Sea in Egypt, but it ended up being one of the highlight of the trip.

If you ever get the chance, take the plunge—you’ll never look at the sea the same way again.

$Welcome to Jordan! 🇯🇴 With a sunset and a sunrise from the mythical Lawrence of Arabia’s Wadi Rum, I’ll share with you the best tips to travel through Jordan: ✨ Make sure you save this post ✨ - All the touristic sites are fairly close -no more than 4-hour drive, but public transport is slow. If you’re in a tight schedule, book a tour. - A great way to go around the country is by renting a car. The highways are well kept (just mind the unannounced speed bumps), and you’ll have much more flexibility to add quick stops along the way. I wouldn’t advise driving into Amman, though, unless you’re used to chaotic middle eastern traffic. - Now, if you have time to spare, public buses are an amazing budget option. The local buses don’t have a schedule -they start when they get filled-, and they stop along the way to let people in and out, so it takes a lot longer to get to your destination. But they cost a fraction of the alternative, Jett Bus. This company has proper schedules, and organize round-trip transport, giving you time to see the sights before returning. - From Amman there are 3 main stations. Abdali for Jett bus, North station for Jerash and Madaba, and South station for Petra and Aqaba. To reach them, use Uber, a ride will cost you between 1 and 3 JD. - There are plenty of places where you can pay with credit/debit card, but I feel like cash is still king. The Jordanian Dinar has a fixed conversion to the US dollar (0.71 JD = 1 USD), but exchange houses charge a commission. Avoid the airport, where the commission is the highest. If you want to withdraw money from an ATM, look for Jordan Kuwait Bank, as they are the only ones that don’t charge. - If you arrive through Amman’s airport, get the Jordan Pass before landing. It’ll cover your visa fee and the entrance to most attractions (including Petra).
